The Intertoto Cup has begun, which means that the long hard off-season of European club football (aka late May-Early June) is finally over. And to welcome you back to the UEFA Cup Offside, here’s a less than welcoming performance from Ireland’s Bohemians, who hosted Rhyl of Wales in the first round of the Intertoto Cup this past week and bested them 5-1. Unless the Welsh can pull off a miracle, its Bohemians through to the second round. This is Boh’s 16th season in Europe in their 118-year history, and we wish the Irish side luck, since the Welsh seem to be all out. Here are the goals.

As the first Champions League matches await, the world is once again focused on the big teams and their quest for the nearly endless pot of money that is the modern European Cup. But, hey, look, what’s that over there? In the shadows, behind the dumpster, back that alley? It’s the UEFA Cup. Always in the shadow of its much bigger brother, Europe’s second-tier continental cup also gets going on the 18th with a single match, as Litex of Bulgaria hosts Hamburg SV. HSV is one of several high-profile teams to qualify this year through the only tournament that makes the UEFA Cup look glamorous, the Intertoto Cup. They had no problem with their qualifying round opponents, Budapest Honved, cruising to a comfortable 4-0 aggregate win. Litex were even more laid back in their last round, beating Albanian side Besa Kavaje by 6-0. It’s been a tough year for Hamburg. After qualifying for the Champions League last season, they finished last in their group, behind Arsenal, Porto, and CSKA Moscow. They took home the group stage cash, but were unable to convert it into results, slipping from third in 05-06 to seventh last season, barely making the Intertoto. Litex finished fourth last season in Bulgaria, admittedly a league that’s dwarfed by the Bundesliga, but they have an interesting bit of history on their side. Litex was the first Bulgarian team to defeat a German team on German soil, beating Union Berlin 2-0 in the 2001-02 UEFA Cup.

Current form doesn’t give us much clue to separating these two. Both are in mediocre form domestically, sitting in the middle of their respective tables and out of next season’s European spots. I think Litex, at their best, can give Hamburg a run for their money. They don’t have a huge superstar on either side of the ball, but the addition of Fabien Boudarene definitely shores up their defensive midfield, and Hamburg should see a very tough run at goal. Hamburg will be looking for goals from Ivica Olic, their Croatian international striker, who had two goals in the Champions League last season with HSV group-mate CSKA Moscow. But goals have been few and far between for HSV so far this year in Germany, with Rafael Van der Vaart topping their list of scorers mainly due to penalties. Hamburg have lost close matches this season, and if Litex can keep them from running, they will have some prayer, but I have to tip Hamburg for this one. Let’s say 1-1 at Litex and 2-0 to Hamburg in Germany.

Then again, if anything can doom them, it’s me predicting them to win, so time will tell.

It may not seem like it, but going into this big week of European football, with both UEFA Cup and Champions League matches on cue, we’ve already played a lot of European games. In fact, between the three major UEFA tournaments (Intertoto, UEFA Cup and Champions League), there have already been 208 matches played in this European season. Since we are past our 200th match of the season, it’s now a prudent time to start looking for early winners and losers. From a league perspective, here’s the best and the worst so far.

Sweden is kicking ass
In the early rounds of Europe this year, there is one undisputed king, and it is Sweden. There are currently five Swedish sides left in European competition (1 Champions League and 4 UEFA Cup), and between them, they are undefeated in sixteen matches so far this season. Hammarby is the only first-round Intertoto Cup team still alive in the UEFA Cup, and the three other Swedish sides in the Cup dispatched their opponents in the last round by a frightening 20-1 margin. Those who take the Swedes lightly this season do so at their peril. They are tough on defense and they can score goals. What they have already accomplished is pretty incredible. Just a note – Finnish sides aren’t doing much worse, with only one loss in their 14 early European matches.

Tough times for Malta
For every nation enjoying a bit of European domination, there must be someone on the other side of the balance, and this year, the European whipping boy seems to be Malta. Maltese sides have lost all eight of their European matches so far, by a depressing total of 28 goals to 3. Where other minnows like Luxembourg and Kazakhstan have enjoyed early successes, Malta has crashed out of Europe badly, and have a long wait to lick their wounds before next season.

The UEFA Cup returns this week, with Intertoto winners like Lens and Blackburn getting their start in the tournament. It should be an interesting week.

The match results are in, and these are the eleven clubs from the Intertoto Cup moving on to UEFA Cup qualifying:

Lens (France)
Rapid Vienna (Austria)
Blackburn Rovers (England)
Hammarby (Sweden)
Aalborg BK (Denmark)

Now, in addition to the fight for the UEFA Cup itself, these teams will be fighting for the Intertoto Cup, now an actual trophy, which will be awarded to the side from this list that progresses the furthest. Last year, it was Newcastle United. Will Blackburn make it an English double? Will Hamburg live up to their expectations and go far? Can Hammarby hold on and continue their dream run? These answers will have to wait until August 16, when the second qualifying round gets underway. Because of their strong UEFA coefficients, three of the Intertoto qualifiers (Lens, Hamburg and Blackburn) will actually be in the top five seeds of the round, and so should have relatively smooth rides into the Cup proper.

Because of Rapid Vienna’s qualification, there could be as many as four Austrian sides in the round. Rapid Vienna and Austria Vienna have already qualified, and both Mattersburg and especially SV Ried are in position to progress in the Cup. This will equal Switzerland’s performance last season, where three of the four qualifiers moved on another step in the Cup as well, and two, Grasshoppers and Basel, made it to the Group stage. Is it Austria’s year to do the same? Time will tell.

Last season, two first-round Intertoto teams made it all the way through that tournament and into the UEFA Cup: Ethnikos of Cyprus and Maribor of Slovenia. This year, neither of these made it past the second round, and there is only one hero of the minnows this season, Hammarby of Sweden. Although the official Intertoto Cup is given to the team that goes the farthest into the UEFA Cup from all the Intertoto rounds, I’d like to suggest a special award for the team that goes farthest from the lowest possible start, the very first round of the Intertoto Cup. That hypothetical award, which remains temporarily without a title … and only exists in my head … goes to Hammarby. Congratulations, or as they say in Sweden, Grattis!

And speaking of underdogs, let me also congratulate Iraq, who won the Asian Cup today. So many in the world were pulling for you – great job.

Video from Atletico Madrid 1-0 Gloria Bistrita yesterday. It was a nice attack and cross, and all credit to Diego Forlan for the finish, but to be fair, the ball should have been well handled. After all, two defenders got feet on it. This was a rare mistake from a Gloria team that really pushed Madrid, one of the best of this year’s Intertoto crop, to its limit. For you kids learning to play back four football, a clearance into the penalty box (especially the 6-yard box) is really no clearance at all.

Well, as Meat Loaf would have said if he was slightly less optimistic, three out of five ain’t bad. I called all the easy ones in today’s Intertoto matches – I just mixed up my Romanian sides. I blame the weeks of constant copying and pasting of the letter “ţ”. Anyway, I guess it was just my hope that Gloria Bistriţa would go all the way from Intertoto alternate to UEFA Cup qualifier. They faltered today, letting Atlético Madrid, another one featuring a letter for which I can never quite find the right alt-key combination, draw on aggregate goals and win on away goals. The five qualifiers so far are Atlético Madrid, Oţelul Galaţi, Sampdoria, Lens and Blackburn. Here are my picks for tomorrow’s six matches. Let’s see if I can top 60%.

My predictions:
União Leiria (Portugal) over Hajduk Kula (Serbia)
Tobol Kostenay (Kazakhstan) over OFI Crete (Greece)
Hamburg (Germany) over Dacia Chişinău (Moldova)
Rapid Vienna (Austria) over Rubin Kazan (Russia)
Utrecht (Netherlands) over Hammarby (Sweden)
Aalborg BK (Denmark) over KAA Gent (Belgium)

Dacia and Hammarby are the last of the first round minnows left, so I hope I’m wrong about one of them, but neither took their home leg, and I can’t see Hamburg losing this early. Maybe Utrecht.

Today, the first five of the eleven UEFA Cup spots will be decided in the Intertoto Cup. Two of the highlight matches feature Romanian clubs who scored big in the first leg, and look to hold on as the tie goes on the road. Gloria Bistriţa is up 2-1 on Atlético Madrid after the first leg, but due to the away goal, Madrid will win on just a 1-0 performance. Oţelul Galaţi is in the exact same spot against the Black Sea Storm of Trabzonspor as the tie goes to Turkey. Both of these teams are dangerous, and I predict at least one of the Romanian sides to finally falter and lose, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see one go through. Statistically, Madrid is most likely to win, but Trabzonspor has had an impressive run, so these should both be fantastic matches.

In other matches today:

Sampdoria hosts Cherno More Varna of Bulgaria. The Italians hold a 1-0 lead after the first leg.
Lens hosts Chornomorets Odessa, after a 0-0 first leg.
Vetra travels to Blackburn to take on Rovers, and will be hard-pressed to recoil after a 2-0 Rovers win in the opening leg.

My predictions:
Gloria Bistriţa over Atlético Madrid (FALSE – looks like I picked the wrong Romanians. Madrid on away goals, 2-2 agg.)
Trabzonspor over Oţelul Galaţi (FALSE – Galaţi repeated their 2-1 win for a total of 4-2 over the Storm!)
Sampdoria over Cherno (TRUE – 2-0 aggregate)
Lens over Odessa (TRUE – 3-1 aggregate)
Blackburn over Vetra (TRUE – Blackburn win on 6-0 aggregate)

More later, after all today’s action. I’m going to go see if I can find the Rovers match on in a pub, but since I’m currently in London, the Arsenal-PSG match will likely be the only thing on.

Another week, another European ejection for fan violence. All we need now is one from the Champions League and we’ll have the UEFA Trifecta of Shame, a feat not accomplished in modern football history. Sigh … let’s get down to the details.

I predicted … let me look … “a former Yugo derby that has to have some strong feelings surrounding it”. I now present myself with the award for understatement of the year. Serbian side Partizan Belgrade and Bosnians HŠK Zrinjski Mostar met on Thursday in a match that police had already deemed high-risk, and it, sadly, more than lived up to that expectation. Fans clashed almost from the beginning, and by the time it was over, 28 police officers were injured, one seriously. All indications are that the officer will recover, and hopefully this incident, unlike the one in Italy last February, will not lead to the death of one of the brave officers trying to keep the peace so that a football game could proceed.

Partizan won the match, 6-1, but because of their fans’ pathetic behavior, their European campaign is over, and a ban may well be coming. It would have been one of the performances of the round, a great victory, but now, the team goes home shamed and humiliated by the very “supporters” that should have been cheering its success.

For those of you interested in seeing it, here is video of the incident. I would say more about what a sad day this is for football, but it’s hardly an unusual day, and I will concentrate instead on being thankful that these nationalist idiots who destroyed their own team’s chances in Europe seemingly took no lives. At least we have that.

There are some nasty scenes in this video, but I think its important that we watch and realize how bad things can get when nationalism and the passion of football meet.

All the goals from the shock of the weekend – Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 loss to Romanian side Gloria Bistrita in the third round of the Intertoto Cup. Gloria has been well-named thus far in the tournament, only making the tournament at all because of the spot made available by Scotland’s withdrawal (Damn you, Elton!). They took great advantage of this opportunity, beating Montenegrin side FK Grbalj in the first round and upsetting perennial European standouts Maccabi Haifa in round two. If they can hold on for the aggregate win against Madrid, they will be the legends of this year’s Intertoto, and will enter the UEFA Cup on a huge high. Enjoy the action. Gloria is in the white shirts, Madrid in the blue.
