Laurie – technically it’s true. Rangers are pretty pro-union, and they love their Union Jacks and so on, so I’m sure they don’t mind being called British. Certain other Scottish clubs might take a bit of umbrage at it.

Inara – actually, it’s only been a few years. 2004-05 saw CSKA Moscow win the UEFA Cup over Sporting. It was a really good final to watch, 3-1, back when Ricardo was in goal for Sporting and getting three past him at that point was a hell of an accomplishment for CSKA. Yeah, aside from my Scotland bias favoring Rangers, I’d love to see Zenit do well.

Zenit – wow! I admittedly don’t know anything about this team, but they sure know how to score those away goals, and they seem like they aren’t afraid of anybody. I’d love to see them in the finals just for that

I absolutely agree, John. I’m really impressed with Getafe this year, between their league, Copa del Ray and UEFA Cup campaigns. For their size, they’re one of the best in Europe this year for sure. Getafe-Bayern will be a great match to watch.

And in Spain, the midfield is king. I won’t say that Bayern have met their match, but next week’s tie will be the match to watch.

No one who has watched Leverkusen the last 3 weeks and Zenit the last two rounds of this competition should be surprised by the result. As for Bayern I think the myth of their iron-clad defense has finally been dispelled. The main reason they have conceded so infrequently in Bundesliga play is their midfield.
