UEFA Cup Live Scores
By: Ian Rose | April 3rd, 2008Here are the latest scorelines from today’s quarterfinal action in the UEFA Cup. It’s been a fantastic day of action, especially for the away teams, as Zenit blew away Leverkusen, and equalizers from PSV and Getafe put all the pressure on favorites Fiorentina and Bayern. We could see this competition blown wide open next week. Incredible - not a single home win.
Results:
Bayer Leverkusen 1-4 Zenit St. Petersburg
Arshavin (ZSP) 20′, Kiessling (BL) 33′, Pogrebnyak (ZSP) 53′, Anyukov (ZSP) 61′, Denisov (ZSP) 64′
Forget their home record. Zenit made a statement on the road today. With a 4-1 win and four vital away goals, this one is all but over before it even goes to Russia. An astonishing result, really. Remember, at the beginning of last round, we had four German sides and a Bundesliga team in the final seemed inevitable. Now, it’s looking like it will be all down to Bayern. Incidentally, Pavel Pogrebnyak is now the joint leading scorer in the competition along with Luca Toni, with eight goals each.
Rangers 0-0 Sporting CP
Rangers kept the expected clean sheet at Ibrox, but a goal would have been nice, considering their away form in Europe is none too sharp. Sporting would have loved the away goal, of course, but keeping Rangers scoreless on their own ground is a great step, and now a single goal at home is all they need for a semifinal berth.
Bayern Munich 1-1 Getafe
Toni (BM) 26′, Contra (G) 90′
Luca Toni regains his position as joint top scorer in the competition, with his eighth to open the scoring in Munich. But it’s a huge day for the Romanian internationals today, as Cosmin Contra scores a late equalizer that puts Getafe in the driver’s seat heading to Spain.
Fiorentina 1-1 PSV Eindhoven
Mutu (F) 56′, Koevermans (PSV) 63′
Adrian Mutu finally nets in Italy, putting the hosts up one, but PSV answers quickly, and it’s all even again, with PSV now holding the crucial away goal.

No one who has watched Leverkusen the last 3 weeks and Zenit the last two rounds of this competition should be surprised by the result. As for Bayern I think the myth of their iron-clad defense has finally been dispelled. The main reason they have conceded so infrequently in Bundesliga play is their midfield.

And in Spain, the midfield is king. I won’t say that Bayern have met their match, but next week’s tie will be the match to watch.

I absolutely agree, John. I’m really impressed with Getafe this year, between their league, Copa del Ray and UEFA Cup campaigns. For their size, they’re one of the best in Europe this year for sure. Getafe-Bayern will be a great match to watch.

Zenit - wow! I admittedly don’t know anything about this team, but they sure know how to score those away goals, and they seem like they aren’t afraid of anybody. I’d love to see them in the finals just for that
When was the last time a Russian team was in a UEFA Cup final anyway?

Over here the Rangers are being billed as “The only UK team still in the UEFA Cup.”

Laurie - technically it’s true. Rangers are pretty pro-union, and they love their Union Jacks and so on, so I’m sure they don’t mind being called British. Certain other Scottish clubs might take a bit of umbrage at it.
Inara - actually, it’s only been a few years. 2004-05 saw CSKA Moscow win the UEFA Cup over Sporting. It was a really good final to watch, 3-1, back when Ricardo was in goal for Sporting and getting three past him at that point was a hell of an accomplishment for CSKA. Yeah, aside from my Scotland bias favoring Rangers, I’d love to see Zenit do well.
