Two UEFA Cup matches under investigation
By: Ian Rose | December 1st, 2007The news is still pretty sketchy, but among the 15 matches in UEFA’s report to Interpol about match fixing are apparently two from our dearest UEFA Cup, both from either this or last year’s competition. Since the investigation is ongoing, there won’t be many more details for a while, but early reports seem to indicate that most, if not all, of the matches involved Eastern European teams. The UEFA Cup obviously involves a lot of small teams without much money to their name. While the big teams are practically immune to (outside) match fixing, since it wouldn’t really be worth the money it would cost to fix, say, Bolton v. Man United, these small teams could possibly be bought, and it looks like some megabucks Asian betting group may have done just that. We’ll try to keep you updated on this disturbing development. I’d like to add to Laurie’s congratulations to UEFA for making this an Interpol issue. UEFA has run far too many internal investigations, which end up being just toothless. Putting the world’s foremost international crime fighting organization on the case makes much more sense, especially given the connection to Asia, noticeably outside of UEFA’s jurisdiction. Let’s hope it’s handled well and quickly.

InterpolEuropol. I wonder whether the outcome of the matches in question had any real impact on the setup of teams in the competition this year…Posted from

My guess is that they were early round matches, both sides of which lost a while back … but the undermining of competitive fairness in a sport is the same whether its the big matches or the little ones. Maybe this is the wakeup we need to stop considering match fixing an “Italy problem”, when the small leagues are clearly more vulnerable to it. We’ll see how it pans out. I REALLY want to know which 2 matches … but it might be a while.
