The Pots for the UEFA Cup Draw

By: Ian Rose | October 5th, 2007

The UEFA Cup group round draw is set for 9 October. I know you’ll all be clenching your teeth and losing sleep until then. For those that don’t watch a lot of UEFA Cup, the group stages are a lot different from the Champions League. The forty teams in the competition are divided into eight groups of five, one each from the pots I’ll be describing in a minute. From that point, each team plays their group-mates only ONCE, not home-and-away like the CL. The draw is random, but ensures that every team plays two home and two away matches. Still, there is the chance to get some very tough draws, so more than the CL, the draw in the UEFA Cup is huge. The top three in each group (=24) move on, and are joined by the eight third-place finishers in the Champions League groups for the single-elimination Round of 32. Here are the pots. Each group will consist of one from each of these pots, with the teams placed by their individual UEFA coefficients:

Pot 1:
Villareal, Bayern Munich, AZ, Panathinaikos, Basel, Bordeaux, Bayer Leverkusen, Anderlecht

Pot 2:
Tottenham, Locomotiv Moscow, Zenit St. Petersburg, Sparta Prague, AEK Athens, Hamburg, Bolton, Austria Vienna

Pot 3:
Spartak Moscow, Sporting Braga, Galatasaray, Atlético Madrid, Getafe, Everton, Fiorentina, Rennes

Pot 4:
Hapoel Tel Aviv, Red Star Belgrade, Copenhagen, Toulouse, Dinamo Zagreb, Panionios, Nürnberg, Mladá Boleslav

Pot 5:
Aris Thessaloniki, Aberdeen, Zürich, AE Larissa, Aalborg, Brann, Elfsborg, Helsingborg

Doesn’t make much of a difference what pot a team is assigned to. There are tough teams in all of them. Especially the third pot has more quality teams than a pot 3 seeding would suggest.

I know. I’ve been thinking about what my dream pot for Aberdeen would be, and that third pot is a tough one. There’s no one there I’d like to play. I guess Sporting Braga would probably be my pick for easiest of the lot, but even they are going to be a tough game for Aberdeen, especially if its away. Third in the group gets through, though, so one good match can be everything.

I agree - Galatasaray could do some real damage. Atletico and Spartak are going to be no pushovers from that pot either.

Cant believe Everton are only in pot 3! Still we are among some good teams so can’t argue. Except Bolton are in pot 2! Have they been watching them this season! Anyway we will still win it!!! Up the Blues
