Swedes in classic UC comeback, Italians fall
By: Ian Rose | October 4th, 2007We have some early results from today’s action in the UEFA Cup, and one of the big stories is Sweden’s Helsingborg. Having lost their opening leg 5-3 to Heerenveen of the Netherlands, their UEFA Cup campaign looked very near an end. But the Mjölkkossan (literally translated, The Milk Cow) came back with a vengeance today, beating the Dutch 5-1 and securing a place in the UEFA Cup group stages.
Other early results:
- Atletico Madrid killed Turkish side Kayseri Erciyesspor for an aggregate of 9-0.
- Locomotiv Moscow and Spartak Moscow both advanced with wins over Scandinavian opponents.
- Nurnberg BARELY got by Rapid Bucharest, winning 2-2 on away goals.
- The Italians lost two sides from UEFA Cup competition today, as Empoli went down to Zurich, and Sampdoria lost on away goals to Aalborg. Palermo and Fiorentina are still to play.
More results to come as the UEFA Cup’s first round comes to a close today.

BARELY is quite exaggerated. The first half was dominated by Bucarest, who scored the first goal but Nuremberg quickly got back into the match and equalised. Nuremberg controlled the second half and got the lead. It almost looked like they could win it, but Bucarest got the equaliser in the 93rd minute. The match was over right after that though. So it wasn’t actually as difficult and troublesome as I had expected following the 0-0 at home.

With Henrik Larsson scoring 3 of Helsingborg’s 8 goals, of course.
