Partizan Belgrade expulsion confirmed

After considering their appeal, UEFA has decided against Partizan Belgrade and confirmed their expulsion from the UEFA Cup. They won decisively in the first qualifying round, beating Mostar Zrinjski of Bosnia 11-1 on aggregate, but violent behavior on the part of their fans led to the ban. I’d like to congratulate UEFA both for the way this was handled and the result. I believe that it was necessary to consider the appeal, and look more clearly at the evidence, but a expulsion was, I think, the appropriate response. Now that Rangers may face Belgrade’s other side, Red Star, there might well be further disciplinary problems for Serbian football ahead. DeMarcus Beasley, who has complained of racist chants directed at him and Jean-Claude Darcheville during their match at Zeta, says he has experienced similar problems at Red Star in the past. Between Rangers and Red Star, UEFA will have a very close eye on that tie, considering the issues both teams have had lately.
