Lens, Hamburg and Leiria held to draws

By: Ian Rose | August 16th, 2007

It’s going to be a bit tougher going for some of the bigger teams in the UEFA Cup’s second qualifying round than they might have expected. Three of the five “big league” Intertoto Cup qualifiers have ended their first leg with only a tie, and for two of the three, a scoreless tie at that. Here are the finishing scorelines.

Honved (Hungary) 0-0 Hamburg
Young Boys (Switzerland) 1-1 Lens
Leiria 0-0 Maccabi Netanya (Israel)

The one that really surprised me was Hamburg, as I expected them to dominate this match, but as Jens Jan said in a previous comment, they are going through a bit of a transfer debacle. Leiria is the only one of these sides that had their opener at home, and this will be a very dangerous situation for them. Netanya is a tricky side, and one mistake is the end of the Portuguese team’s Cup season. Lens, at least, got the away goal, and they should be able to handle Young Boys back in France. It will be very interesting to see how these end up. It might be that Anorthosis isn’t the biggest upset after all.

Yup, van der Vaart faked had some weird injury and couldn’t play. Good news for Valencia. Since he didn’t play in this match, he would still be allowed to play for them in the Champions League. Coincidence.

Anyway, Hamburg didn’t play too well but at least Honved didn’t look much like a threat either so Hamburg shouldn’t have that much trouble at home, unless Honved seriously up their game.

The name is Jan though. ;-)

Sorry, mate. My most regular commenter and I bugger up your name … great. You can call me Liam or Jim in return if you’d like. All fixed now.
