Insane: Spurs and Toffees out on penalties
By: Ian Rose | March 12th, 2008We all knew it was going to be a tough climb for Spurs and Everton today. Both went into the second legs of their Round of 16 ties behind and needing goals. Everton was down 2-0 to Fiorentina after being really played off the pitch in the first match. Spurs were down just one goal, but it was an away goal, and we all know how dangerous those can be. Personally, I expected Spurs to make up the ground, but thought Toffees were just a little too far in the hole. As it turns out, I was wrong, and both came even after regular time. Spurs got a great goal from Dimitar Berbatov to even up the series, and Everton it was Andy Johnson and Mikel Arteta for Everton. Credit to both for fighting back to an even keel. Still, penalties are a toss up, and anything can happen once it goes to a shootout. Fiorentina were a perfect 4-for-4, while Everton missed two, as Viola now move on to the quarters and shock the Toffees with a trip back to Merseyside. The PSV-Spurs shootout was even more nerve-racking, ending up 6-5 to PSV. That’s two English sides out, and one more, Bolton, facing a battle tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Anderlecht managed a gutsy 2-1 win in Munich, but it was not nearly enough to overcome the slaughter of the first leg, and Bayern moves on. Hamburg lost on away goals to Leverkusen, after a great 3-2 in Hamburg. Getafe won in Spain 1-0 to eliminate Benfica, and Zenit managed a great comeback against Marseille, beating them 2-0 on the day and taking an away-goals victory.
Insane day, and more to come tomorrow.

I love it. Entering the Quarter-finals so far we have two German teams, a Spanish team, an Italian team, a Dutch team and a Russian team. If Rangers hold on tomorrow, we’ll add a Scottish team to the list, and the remaining side will be either Portuguese or English. That means if the Rangers defend their two goal advantage, the eight remaining teams will be from 7 different leagues. What a great competition it’s turning out to be this year!

john – I totally agree. Hopefully the parity of the UEFA Cup, matched with the 4-EPL-side mess of the Champions League, will bring a little more attention to this severely under-covered little tournament. This is everything I love about the UC.

Our underdog favorite Hamburg are out, but they did not go quietly into that good night. On a night when they REALLY needed to be defensive, they conceded 2 goals and despite scoring 3 goals in the second half, they are out on away goals. Sigh.
