Greeks wreak havoc in UEFA Cup

By: Ian Rose | October 4th, 2007

The Greek sides in the UEFA Cup went on a rampage in this round. Here’s a quick rundown. All scores shown are aggregates.

AEK Athens 3-1 Red Bull Salzburg
Thank you, AEK, for eliminating Red Bull. Their policy of denying the team existed before they bought it sickens me.

Artmedia Bratislava 1-5 Panathinaikos
A convincing two wins over the Slovakian side.

Sochaux 1-2 Panionios
Along with Lens’ loss, the French lost two sides today. The Italians lost THREE.

AE Larissa 3-2 Blackburn
“Know Your Minnows” alum Larissa takes the first English scalp of the tournament. What will England do, with only seven teams remaining in European competition?

Aris Thessaloniki 2-2 Real Zaragoza (Aris win on away goals)
Like England, Spain still has 7 teams left, but Zaragoza had to be expecting a win here.

The really strange thing about this, aside from the fact that Greece has 5 teams in the UEFA Cup group stage, is that only one of these, Panathinaikos, actually won their matches today. The rest got through on dominating first-leg victories. Amazing. Congratulations to Greece. Like us Scottish football fans, those of the Greek game should be on top of the world tonight. Please drink responsibly.

Damn, that’s impressive. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go back to mourning the collapse of the Italian hopes.

Looks like all the German teams got through as well, unless I’m missing one…

No, you’re right, Abby. The German sides were four out of four, a nice change of pace after the Bundesliga’s poor start to the Champions League.

Martha – yeah, as good as the Greeks were, the Italian sides were exactly that bad … eek … Fiorentina is going to be lonely in the group stages.

The Viola have a real chance to go deep, though — they’re a class team, and remarkably young (apart from Bobo Vieri).
