End of the road for Gloria. Madrid barely survives.
By: Ian Rose | July 28th, 2007Well, as Meat Loaf would have said if he was slightly less optimistic, three out of five ain’t bad. I called all the easy ones in today’s Intertoto matches – I just mixed up my Romanian sides. I blame the weeks of constant copying and pasting of the letter “ţ”. Anyway, I guess it was just my hope that Gloria Bistriţa would go all the way from Intertoto alternate to UEFA Cup qualifier. They faltered today, letting Atlético Madrid, another one featuring a letter for which I can never quite find the right alt-key combination, draw on aggregate goals and win on away goals. The five qualifiers so far are Atlético Madrid, Oţelul Galaţi, Sampdoria, Lens and Blackburn. Here are my picks for tomorrow’s six matches. Let’s see if I can top 60%.
My predictions:
União Leiria (Portugal) over Hajduk Kula (Serbia)
Tobol Kostenay (Kazakhstan) over OFI Crete (Greece)
Hamburg (Germany) over Dacia Chişinău (Moldova)
Rapid Vienna (Austria) over Rubin Kazan (Russia)
Utrecht (Netherlands) over Hammarby (Sweden)
Aalborg BK (Denmark) over KAA Gent (Belgium)
Dacia and Hammarby are the last of the first round minnows left, so I hope I’m wrong about one of them, but neither took their home leg, and I can’t see Hamburg losing this early. Maybe Utrecht.
