2007-08 UEFA Cup Is Underway

By: Ian Rose | July 19th, 2007

The Intertoto Cup is fun. I love it, I really do. But, let’s face it. This is not the Intertoto Cup blog. This blog is about the UEFA Cup, the second most prestigious European tournament. And though, financially, it may be the bastard step-child of the Champions League, the UEFA Cup is my favorite club tournament on the face of the Earth. As of today, it has begun.

Today, 74 teams from 43 nations begin their European campaigns in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. Those that win their opening ties will go on to face not only their second qualifying round seeded opponents, but also the winners of the Intertoto’s elven qualifying spots.

Some impressive early away wins today.

In early news today, the big winner of the first leg seems to be SK Brann of Norway who have beaten Welsh side Carmarthen Town by an impressive 8-0 in Wales. Carmarthen goes on the road with an 8 goal deficit, all of them away goals. It’s over. The British Isles’ woes continued with another huge home loss, as Northern Ireland’s Glentoran lost at home 5-0 to AIK of Sweden.

In a former Yugo derby that has to have some strong feelings surrounding it, Partizan Belgrade of Serbia beat Bosnian side Mostar 6-1 in Mostar’s own house.

More on the first qualifying round as it develops. Unfortunately, my traveling schedule is such that I won’t be posting quite as often as usual, but I’ll try my best. Thank you, Borders wireless internet.

Also worth noting that the Andorran club Santa Coloma beat Maccabi Tel Aviv. The first European win ever for a team from Andorra. I believe they are an amateur team.

I have to say that I find this whole UEFA Cup qualifying system very confusing. So the Intertoto winners start in the second UEFA Cup qualifying round and the next round from there is the group stage?

Nice to see a Brann fan checking in … or is it just a Wales hater? :)
