Wednesday UEFA Cup wrap-up
By: Ian Rose | February 13th, 2008Final scores from today’s UEFA Cup round of 32 first leg matches at the end of this post. Everton continue to look unstoppable after taking the only road victory of the day, and are making a serious bid for favorite to take home the Blender. The two Greek sides in play both took draws today, one home and one away, but AEK dropped a home goal to Getafe, making it an uphill climb for them. Werder Bremen and Marseille both took solid 3-0 home wins, so they can count on a pretty smooth ride to the last 16, while Rangers and Galatasaray still have it all up in the air after only managing scoreless draws at home. Bordeaux started ahead with an early penalty, but dropped two to Anderlecht in the final 20 minutes. Here are the final scores from today’s matches:
Zenit St. Petersburg 1-0 Villarreal
Galatasaray 0-0 Bayer Leverkusen
AEK Athens 1-1 Getafe
Brann Bergen 0-2 Everton
Werder Bremen 3-0 Braga
Anderlecht 2-1 Bordeaux
Marseille 3-0 Spartak Moscow
PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Helsingborg
Rangers 0-0 Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon 2-0 Basel

Bayern tied 2-2 away at Aberdeen. Kind of a suprise that Aberdeen was able to hold strong; I think Bayern are the likely favorites of the Cup. However, my heart, in this competition at least, still lies with plucky Getafe, who drew away from home against Athens yesterday. Vamos Azules!
