Bełchatów tries to reclaim Poland’s footballing honor
By: Ian Rose | July 18th, 2007After the Intertoto incident that got Legia Warsaw kicked out of that tournament, comments have been thrown about all over Europe as to whether Poland is ready to host Euro 2012. There is extra pressure now on the three remaining Polish clubs in Europe (Zagłębie Lubin in the Champions League; Dyskobolia Grodzisk and GKS Bełchatów in the UEFA Cup). At least Bełchatów, last season’s Polish league runner-up, seems to be bolstering their side in preparation for both domestic and European seasons.
Bełchatów has brought in two players from Peruvian side CA Lima, defender Joel Herrera and midfielder Alexander Sanchez. Herrera is a Peruvian international fresh from the Copa América. Both UEFA Cup Polish sides start first qualifying round action tomorrow, so we’ll soon see if there’s some good news to distract the international press from the disaster against Vetra.
Speaking of tomorrow, the UEFA Cup officially begins tomorrow. 37 matches will make it a very full day of football, granted one that many of us will have a very hard time finding on the telly. I’ll try to report as fully as I can, hopefully with some video from the joy that is the Interwebses.
