Video: MLS needs these sort of corners
By: Ian Rose | June 27th, 2007They may not have the excitement of a Messidonna-esque run through the defense, but set pieces are a great way to get the biscuit in the basket, if you know how to finish them. One complaint I have about the (admittedly over-abused) Major League Soccer league in the US is the ability to finish corner kicks. So many fly by without anyone in the right place.
Maybe the league should do some recruiting in eastern Europe. Last weekend’s first-round Intertoto Cup match between NK Zagreb of Croatia and Villaznia of Albania was a cagey affair, with three goals, off of three corner kicks. Watch and learn. This is how corner kicks should be handled.

Great. And I thought I’d never see moving images of first round Intertoto matches in my life.

Conversely you could use that video to demonstrate how not to play defense on corners. The Eastern European buildings in the first shot did bring a tear to my eye though.

Bob – I agree on the third one, certainly. That was horrible defending. But the second goal is a nice header, and I think it would have been a pretty amazing save that would have stopped that one.

The first round of Intertoto is so odd. In the sense that it’s so early. But hey, who’s complaining? Forza Vetra!
