Third Qualifying Round: Second Leg Results

By: Dan | August 6th, 2009

We’ve certainly come a long way from Zestaponi v. Lisburn Distillery. The conclusion of the third qualifying round has, for the most part, been a mixture of the big boys starting to throw their weight around and teams with an advantage from the first leg finishing things off in a businesslike manner.

Even close games from the first leg produced rather one sided victors today. There were a few close matches sprinkled in though, and one major surprise.

St. Patrick’s defied all expectations by knocking out Krylya Sovetov. Most people, myself included, thought that their 1-0 win last week would be a nice but fleeting memory before the Russian side crushed St. Patrick’s at home. Krylya actually went three goals up before St. Patrick’s got two goals back within five minutes of each other. They were able to hold on to complete the incredible upset.

Gent’s supporters offered more resistance against Roma than their players did. The fans responded to Marko Suler’s dismissal just before halftime with a missile barrage, but Gent clearly didn’t have it in them to give Roma another battle. Roma won by an unfortunately familiar scoreline, 7-1.

Red Star Belgrade, who looked done for, after losing in Tbilisi last week and conceding two first half away goals today, staged a successful comeback. An 88th minute Dejan Lekic goal proved the difference between bowing out with a face saving win, and winning the tie.

Brondby, Athletic Bilbao, and PAOK all advanced on away goals. Rapid Vienna needed extra time to get past APOP of Cyprus, and in the closest tie of the round, FK Sarajevo eliminated Helsingborg on penalties.

No one is going to have to wait very long to find out where to book their next plane ticket. The draw for the playoff round, which includes the first batch of Champions League drop-outs (welcome back Shakhtar) takes place tomorrow. The unseeded group has some potentially unwelcome opponents that include Dinamo Moscow, Genoa, Metalurh Donetsk and Brondby.
