The worst starts in Europe, 2007-08

By: Ian Rose | October 20th, 2007

(Like the Luxembourg post, this is a little off-topic, but I don’t really care. Sue me.)

So, we are about 1/4 into most of the football seasons in Europe, and it’s time to start taking stock of who’s doing well, who needs some improvement, and who is already headed to the basement for keeps. I have compiled a list of the 5 worst starts in any league in Europe this season. A few rules before we begin. First, this does not include the few teams who have already been relegated, or are so far into their season that all hope is lost. The most notable of these is Ajax Lasname of Estonia, who currently sit 10 points out of safety with 3 matches left (aka screwed) and with a phenomenally, almost impressively, bad goal differential of -132. Also not included is relegated Russian side Rostov, whose 14 points would have had to have doubled to reach safety, which is now statistically impossible with only four matches left in the season. No, these five sides are at about the 1/4-way mark, and already have fallen far behind their competition, though not out of statistical hope.

PS – It may be a sad day for Bolton fans, falling into the bottom spot in the Premier League, but at least they can take solace in not making this list. I promise that I am not making the name of the fourth team up. Abbreviation, people. Look into it. I count 15 consonants. Anyway, on with the list.

1. FC Senec (Slovakia)
[10 pts from safety, -13 GD after 11 games]
2. Mladost (Montenegro)
[10 pts from safety, -11 GD after 9 games]
3. Varteks (Croatia)
[8 pts from safety, -18 GD after 11 games]
4. Naftovyk-Ukrnafta Okhtyrka (Ukraine)
[8 pts from safety, -14 GD after 12 games]
5. FC Wacker Innsbruck (Austria)
[6 pts from safety, -17 GD after 13 games]
