KR of Iceland completed a memorable upset, as they held Larissa to a 1-1 draw in Greece to take the tie 3-1 on aggregate. Falkirk’s slim first leg advantage was for naught, as Liechtenstein’s Vaduz triumphed 2-0 after extra time. Two of last season’s Champions League surprises were dumped out; Anorthosis were eliminated by Montenegrin side Petrovac, while Aalborg were beaten 3-1 in Bosnia by Slavija. Norwegian big boys Rosenborg fell to Azerbaijan’s Karabakh after failing to score a single goal over two legs.

As for upsets that didn’t quite happen, Zestaponi were heartbroken in the final moments again by Helsingborg. A late goal from Joel Ekstrand, his first for the club, staved off elimination and sent the tie into extra time where Erik Sundin scored the winner. The late away goal that Milos Maric salvaged for Gent last week proved vital, as a 1-0 win in Belgium was enough to send Natfan home. Flora of Estonia and Differdange of Luxembourg could not hold onto their surprising first leg leads; Brondby and Rijeka completed decisive comebacks.

Motherwell also completed a major turnaround from a first leg deficit. After losing in Albania last week, the Steelmen put eight past Flamurtari. Croatians Slaven Belupo also scored eight goals, as they rather emphatically eliminated their former Yugoslavian compatriots, Macedonia’s Milano.

In the final game of the day, Pacos de Ferreira, who had been complaining of the cost that Europa League travel involved, decided, eventually, that there are worse burdens to bear than continuing in European competition. Cristiano scored the only goal of the tie against Zimbru Chisinau in the 84th minute.
