There were certainly some games that ended with rather surprising results. Occasional Champions League representative Brondby lost at home to Estonian side Flora. Fellow Danes Aalborg, who performed more than admirably in European competition last season, were held to a goalless draw at home by Slavija. Belarusians Naftan beat Gent, though they probably would have been happier without Gent’s very late away goal that narrowed the score to 2-1. Luxembourg picked up a rare European victory, as Croatians Rijeka fell to Differdange, who actually hold the unfortunate record of heaviest UEFA Cup defeat; they lost 14-0 in Amsterdam, after holding Ajax to 0-0 in the first leg, in the 1984-85 competition. Motherwell will need to overturn another first leg defeat, after losing in Albania to Flamurtari Vlore.

Our new favorite Georgians Zestaponi joined sides like Juventus, Boavista, Blackburn Rovers, and Porto in being undone in European competition by a Henrik Larsson goal; in this case, Larsson waited until the 89th minute to inflict the damage. More famous Georgians Dinamo Tbilisi had similar problems, losing to Latvian side Liepajas Metalurgs.

European competition began for some more familiar names in this round as well. In a match up of big Eastern European names, Steaua Bucharest won against Ujpest. Galatasaray salvaged a 1-1 draw against Tobol of Kazakhstan. Rapid Vienna easily dispatched Vllaznia 5-0, which was not quite enough for the day’s largest margin of victory. NAC Breda beat Armenians Gandzasar 6-0. Red Star Belgrade, Basel, and Legia Warsaw also won their matches.
