Off Topic: Go Luxembourg!
By: Ian Rose | October 14th, 2007Okay, this has nothing to do with the UEFA Cup, but since the I like to talk about little minnow teams on this blog, I had to make a quick shout-out to the Luxembourg National Team, who beat Belarus 1-0 yesterday in Euro 2008 qualifying, for their first Euro qualifying points since 1995. That was the year when they beat all expectations to finish with a whopping ten points in their group, beating Malta twice and playing to draws with Belarus and, amazingly, with the Czech Republic. Those with an even longer memory harken back to the incredible 1964 Euros, when Luxembourg made it all the way to the quarter finals! Since their last win in ‘95, there have been two qualifying campaigns and 0 points total for the Luxembourg team. There have been some drummings, like the 6-0 loss to England in 1999, and the 7-0 defeat by Romania in 2002. But now, their streak is over. Congratulations to Luxembourg on the end of a painful streak.
